A 30-degree incline flye with a rotating grip: pinkies together and palms facing you at the top, palms rotating up toward the ceiling as the arms open. The twist is real and worth understanding, but it changes the wrist and forearm more than it changes the chest — treat it as a variation for feel, not a better flye.

Breathing & tempo — Inhale as the arms open and the palms turn up, exhale as they close and the pinkies turn in. Three seconds out, three seconds back, no pause at the bottom.
Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
Go lighter than a plain incline flye: 5-8 kg to learn the rotation, and expect your working weight to sit 20-30% below your standard flye indefinitely. The marker of a good set is that the twist is still smooth on the last rep. Progress by adding reps to 15 first, then 2 kg.
The errors that show up most often, and the cue that fixes each one.
Slow the rep to three seconds each way and spread the twist evenly across it. If the wrists flick at the endpoints, the tempo is too fast for the coordination.
Cap the load at what you can rotate smoothly for 12 reps. A dumbbell that forces you to abandon the twist halfway through the set has already made the variation pointless.
Grip hard and keep the knuckles stacked over the forearm. If the wrists still fold, use hex dumbbells or drop 2 kg — this variation loads the forearm more than a neutral flye.
Freeze the elbow at 20 degrees and check it in a mirror or on video for one set. Any elbow change means you are pressing with a twist, which is a different exercise.
Rotating the hand from neutral to supinated as the arms open subtly changes the humerus position at the bottom. Supination externally rotates the upper arm, which puts the shoulder in a slightly more open, less impingement-prone position at the point where the flye is hardest. That is the honest case for the twist.
The claim it usually gets sold with — that supinating harder recruits more pec fibres — is thin. The pec does contribute to internal rotation, so turning the palms up actually lengthens it rather than shortening it. What you gain is a stronger stretch sensation and a shoulder that sits better at the bottom, not extra muscle recruited.
Slot it in where a plain incline flye would go: at the end of a chest session, 2-3 sets of 10-15, after all pressing. Rotate it in for a few weeks when the standard flye starts to bother your shoulder, then rotate back. It is not a movement that needs a permanent place in a program.
No kit, too hard, or too easy — here's where to go instead.
No meaningful evidence says so. Supination lengthens the pec rather than shortening it, so if anything the twist works against peak contraction. What it genuinely offers is a better-positioned shoulder at the bottom of the arc and a different feel. Pick it for those reasons, not for extra growth.
Nothing is wrong — the supinated position under load asks a lot of the wrist extensors, especially with round-handled dumbbells that want to roll. Drop the weight, grip the handle hard, and keep the knuckles in line with the forearm. If it persists, the plain incline flye gives you the same chest work without the wrist tax.
Until the palms face the ceiling, and no further. Forcing extra supination past that point loads the elbow and wrist rather than opening the shoulder any more. If you cannot reach palms-up comfortably with a light dumbbell, the limitation is forearm mobility and it will improve with practice.
Not permanently. Use the twist as a rotation for four to six weeks when the standard flye is irritating your shoulder or you want a different stimulus, then go back. The plain version lets you handle more load with less coordination overhead, which makes it the better default.
