The front box jump is a two-footed jump from standing onto a raised box. It trains rate of force development — how fast you can produce force, not how much — and the box exists to give you a soft landing, not to measure your bravery.
Set up first, then execute. Every cue below is something you can check on your next set.
Breathing & tempo — One breath per jump: inhale as you set, exhale sharply as you leave the floor. Explosive on the way up, absolutely no tempo prescription on the landing beyond quiet.
Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
Bodyweight only. Progress by increasing box height in small steps once you can land every rep softly in a quarter-squat, or by pausing between reps to remove the stretch reflex — never by adding reps until the set becomes conditioning.

Always step down. Repeatedly absorbing the landing from height is where box-jump injuries come from, and it trains nothing the jump up did not already.
A high box mostly measures how far you can tuck your knees, not how high you jumped. Use a height you can land on in a quarter-squat with your chest up.
Land quietly. Noise is unabsorbed force. If you cannot land softly, the box is too high or you are too fatigued to continue.
Keep sets to 3-5 jumps with full recovery. Once jump height drops, stop — fatigued plyometrics carry the risk without the adaptation.
Strength training teaches you to produce large force slowly. Jumping teaches you to produce force quickly, and the two adapt separately. A box jump is the most accessible way to train the fast end without the landing impact of jumping straight back down to the floor.
That last point is the whole reason for the box. Landing on a raised surface shortens the distance you fall, so your knees and ankles absorb far less impact than they would from a maximal vertical jump. The box is protective equipment, not the goal.
Early in a session, straight after the warm-up and before heavy lifting, when your nervous system is fresh. Plyometrics are quality work: 3-5 sets of 3-5 jumps with full rest between sets. The moment your jumps slow down, the training effect is gone and you are just doing cardio with injury risk.

Low enough that you land in a quarter-squat with your chest up and your feet flat. If you have to tuck your knees to your chest to clear it, you are testing hip flexibility, not jumping ability.
No. Stepping down is the rule. The impact of repeatedly landing from box height is exactly what the box was chosen to avoid, and it is where almost every box-jump injury comes from.
They are poor for it. Plyometrics are low-volume, high-quality nervous-system work with long rests. If you want conditioning, use something you can sustain safely when tired — this is not it.
One to two sessions a week, always fresh, always before heavy lifting. That is enough to improve jumping ability without accumulating joint stress.
