Bear Crawl Sled Drags

A sled dragged from a harness or belt while you travel on hands and feet, hips low and knees just off the floor. The crawl position removes the hip extension you would get from walking, so the quads and the trunk take almost all of the work over a 15-20 metre lane.

How to

Own the movement

Set up first, then execute. Every cue below is something you can check on your next set.

Before the first rep

  • Fit the harness across your chest or a loose belt at your waist, and run the chain out behind you so it will not tangle in your feet.
  • Load light. A sled you can crawl with is roughly a third of what you could drag standing.
  • Set your hands under your shoulders, knees under your hips and about 5 cm off the floor.
  • Flatten your back before you take the strain — a level line from tailbone to skull, hips no higher than your shoulders.
  • Take up the slack in the chain first so the sled starts moving with you, not with a jerk.

Every rep

Drive one knee forward and the opposite hand at the same time, and keep the alternation strict.

Take short strides, 20-30 cm. Long reaches let your hips lift and hand you the load back.

Push the floor away with your palms to steady the trunk — the hands stabilise, the legs pull.

Keep your head in line with your spine and your eyes about a metre ahead of your hands.

Stop the set when your hips start climbing, not when the lane ends.

Breathing & tempo — Breathe continuously through the lane — this is too long to hold a brace. Exhale on the hard strides, keep the abs firm between breaths, and never move slower than roughly one stride per second.

Start with the bare sled plus 20 kg on turf or 10 kg on rubber — surface changes the load more than plates do. A workable standard is 20 metres unbroken with a flat back. Add 5-10 kg once two consecutive sessions finish every lane without your hips rising, and reset the load whenever you change surface.

What goes wrong

The errors that show up most often, and the cue that fixes each one.

Hips riding up until it becomes a downward-dog shuffle.

Cut the load by 10-20 kg and set a rule: hips never higher than shoulders. Film one lane from the side so you know what your own sag looks like.

Loading it like a standing sled drag.

Start at roughly a third of your standing drag weight and add 5 kg per session only while every lane stays flat-backed and unbroken.

Reaching with long strides to cover ground faster.

Count your strides across the lane and hold that number session to session. If the count drops, you are reaching, and reaching is how the hips climb and the sled wins its leverage back.

Letting the chain slacken and then snatch tight.

Keep constant tension by starting each stride from an already-loaded chain. Move continuously rather than in stop-start lunges.

The case for it

Why bother

Crawling forward with a sled behind you locks your torso roughly parallel to the ground. From there you cannot lean back into the harness the way you would on a standing drag, so every metre comes from short, hard knee extensions instead of from bodyweight tipping into the strap. That is why a load you could walk with for a minute feels immovable in this position.

The second cost is bracing. Your hands are on the floor and the chain is pulling backwards from your waist, which tries to sag your hips and hollow your lower back on every stride. Holding a flat back for 20 metres under that pull is anti-extension work the sled does for free, and it is the reason the load has to stay modest.

Where it fits

End of a lower-body day, or as a standalone finisher two or three times a week. Your shoulders and wrists cap the lane long before your legs do, so four to six lanes is a whole session. Never put it before squats — it flattens the exact brace and quad drive the heavy work needs — and do not treat it as a substitute for a standing drag, which trains a different position at three times the load.

How much weight should be on the sled?

Far less than you think. Roughly a third of what you can drag standing is a sane opening bid, because the crawl position removes the hip extension and the bodyweight lean that make a standing drag manageable. The load is right when you can cover 20 metres continuously with your hips level and your back flat.

Is this conditioning or leg training?

Both, and which one you get is decided by the load. Heavy and short — 15 metres, 90 seconds rest — is quad and trunk work. Light and long — 40 metres with a walk-back — is conditioning. Trying to run both at once gives you a middling version of each.

Can I do it without a sled?

A harness on a loaded prowler, a tyre on a rope or even a weight plate on a towel over a smooth floor all work. What you cannot substitute is the rearward pull at the waist: a plain bear crawl trains the position but not the drag, and it is a much easier exercise.

My wrists hurt during the crawl. What now?

Your wrists are holding a large share of your bodyweight in full extension for the length of the lane, and most people meet that limit before their legs do. Crawl on your fists or on push-up handles to keep the wrist neutral, and cut the lane short rather than gritting through it. If the ache only appeared once you added plates, the sled is pulling you further forward onto your hands than the position can carry — take 10 kg off and rebuild the distance.
