A single-leg hinge holding one kettlebell on the same side as the standing leg, free leg extending behind you as a counterweight. Loading the same side as the working leg pulls you into rotation, so the hip has to resist twisting while it extends — a demand no two-legged deadlift makes.
Set up first, then execute. Every cue below is something you can check on your next set.
Breathing & tempo — Inhale and brace at the top, hold through the descent, exhale as you stand. Two to three seconds down, one second up — this is a control movement, and rushing it costs you the balance element that makes it worth doing.
Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
Start with 8-12 kg, or bodyweight only if you cannot yet reach parallel without your free foot touching down. The marker to progress is 8 clean reps per leg with the pelvis level and no toe touch — then move up one bell size, which is a 4 kg jump, and rebuild to that standard. Most people can eventually handle roughly half of what they use for a two-legged Romanian deadlift.
The errors that show up most often, and the cue that fixes each one.
Point the toe of the free leg straight down at the floor and imagine two headlights on your hip bones staying aimed at the ground. Film one set from behind — the twist is obvious on video and almost invisible from the inside.
Stop the descent where a flat back stops. Depth is not the goal; a hamstring stretch under a neutral spine is. If you can only reach 45 degrees today, that is the rep.
Set the knee at a soft 15-degree bend and lock it there. Cue the movement as hips travelling backwards, not the body travelling down.
Halve the bell. Balance is the limiting factor at first and no adaptation happens while you are hopping. Once you can do 8 controlled reps without your free foot touching down, add load.
Always lead with the weaker side and cap the strong side at the same number of reps. That is the only way the imbalance the movement exposes actually closes.
On two legs, one hip can quietly take more than its share and you will never know. Here there is nowhere to hide: the standing hamstring and glute produce every newton, at a load light enough that they work through a long range rather than a heavy inch.
The ipsilateral load — bell in the hand on the same side as the standing foot — is what makes this version worth doing. That offset wants to rotate your pelvis open, and the glute medius and deep hip rotators have to shut that down through the whole rep. Holding the bell in the opposite hand is easier and trains something different; know which one you are doing.
As accessory work after your main hinge or squat, or as the primary hinge on a day when your lower back needs a break — the spinal load here is a fraction of a barbell deadlift for the same hamstring stimulus. Sets of 6-10 per leg, two sessions a week. Always start the set with your weaker side and match the reps on the strong side, not the other way round.

Same side is the version described here, and it is the harder one: the load pulls your pelvis into rotation and the standing hip has to resist it. Opposite hand is more stable and lets you use more weight, which makes it the better choice if pure hamstring load is your goal. Pick deliberately rather than by accident.
Until your torso is roughly parallel to the floor, or until your back would have to round to go further — whichever comes first. Most people stop several centimetres short of parallel with good hamstring flexibility, and that is a fine working range. Touching the bell to the floor is a party trick, not a target.
Only up to a point. Small corrections are the ankle and hip doing their job. Hopping around for six reps means the load is too heavy or the pattern is not there yet — regress to a bodyweight version, or rest your free toe lightly behind you, and build from there.
For hamstring and glute development at moderate loads, largely yes, and it costs your lower back far less. It cannot replace them for maximal strength, because balance caps the load long before your posterior chain does. Use it as the main hinge in a low-back-friendly block, not as your top-end strength lift.
