Breathing & tempo — Inhale and brace at the top, exhale slowly through the descent, breathe once at the bottom before you stand. Three seconds down, one-second pause, three seconds up.
Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
Two very different loads. Overhead: about half what you can strict press, often 8-12 kg to start. Bottom: whatever you can pick up without rounding, typically 12-20 kg. Progress the bottom bell in one size step at a time and leave the overhead bell alone until you can hold a locked elbow through a full-depth rep on both sides.
The errors that show up most often, and the cue that fixes each one.
Push the hip of the loaded side out first and keep the front leg near-straight. If your knees travel forward, reset and start the rep with the hip.
Lock the elbow and actively push the bell toward the ceiling throughout. Drop to a lighter top bell until you can hold that lockout for the full descent.
Stop at the depth where your spine stays long, and place the bottom bell on a block or plate to shorten the reach until your hips open up.
Take three seconds down and three up, with a pause at the bottom. Speed here buys nothing and puts a loaded shoulder in a rotated position it cannot control.
Use roughly half your strict press weight overhead and add to the bottom bell first — that is where extra load is safe and useful.
The overhead bell never moves relative to the ground, but your torso rotates and side-bends underneath it. Your shoulder has to keep the bell stacked over the joint through 90 degrees of thoracic rotation, and the obliques on the down side have to control how fast you fold. Very few movements load rotation and overhead stability in the same rep.
The second bell is what separates this from the single-bell version. It gives the hinge something to lift on the way up, so the hamstrings and glutes get real work rather than just bodyweight, and it keeps your bottom shoulder honest — you cannot dump into a lazy reach when there is 16 kg in that hand.
Early in a session as skill work, or as the top of a kettlebell warm-up sequence. Three to five reps a side is plenty; this is a positional lift, not a volume lift. Do not pair it in the same session with heavy overhead pressing — the shoulder is already spending its stability budget here.

The single version has an empty bottom hand, so the descent is bodyweight only and you can reach as far as you like. Adding a bell in the bottom hand loads the hinge, forces you to grip and control something at full depth, and makes standing up an actual lift rather than a return to standing. Run the single-bell version until it is clean on both sides before you pick up a second bell.
Yes. Keeping your eyes on it keeps your thoracic spine rotating open and your shoulder stacked. The moment you look at the floor your chest closes down and the bell drifts forward, which is exactly the position you do not want under load.
Both, and that is the honest answer. It trains the obliques and the deep trunk under rotation while also demanding hip and thoracic range. If you only want abs, a loaded carry or a rollout gets there with less skill overhead.
No. Depth is limited by hamstring length and thoracic rotation, not by willpower. Stop where your top arm stays vertical and your spine stays long, and raise the bottom bell on a plate if you need to. Range comes back over weeks.
