
Standing on a platform with your heels supported and the balls of your feet hanging off, you pull your toes up against gravity while a Smith machine bar sits on your back for balance. This trains the tibialis anterior on the front of the shin — the muscle that decelerates your foot on every step and gets no attention from any calf raise.
Set up first, then execute. Every cue below is something you can check on your next set.
Breathing & tempo — Breathe normally throughout; there is no need to brace for this load. Three seconds down, one-second hold at the top, roughly one second up.
Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
Empty bar. Progress by adding reps and by slowing the lowering phase to four or five seconds rather than by adding plates — the bar is a balance aid, not resistance. Good looks like 25 reps with a full one-second hold at the top and no torso movement.
The errors that show up most often, and the cue that fixes each one.
Keep your hips stacked over your heels and let the movement happen at the ankle alone. Watch your shadow or a mirror from the side — the torso should not move at all.
Use the empty bar. The load on your tibialis is set by body mass over the ankle joint, not plates on your shoulders — the extra weight adds spine compression and no training effect.
Take three seconds to lower. The lengthening portion is exactly what a runner's tibialis fails at, so it is the part worth training deliberately.
Go to 20-25 reps with a one-second hold. The tibialis anterior is small and endurance-biased; short heavy sets do not challenge it meaningfully.
Every calf raise in the gym trains plantarflexion — pointing the toes. Dorsiflexion, pulling the toes toward the shin, is trained by nothing except walking uphill. The tibialis anterior that performs it is the muscle that lowers your forefoot to the ground each step, and when it cannot handle that repeated eccentric load, the result is the front-of-shin pain runners call shin splints.
Be clear about the bar. Upstream instructions treat it as loading, but it is not: the tibialis anterior is small and the bar sits on your shoulders, not on your toes, so most of the resistance you feel is your own body weight rotating over the ankle. The Smith machine's role here is stability and a fixed path, nothing more. Adding plates changes very little.
At the end of a leg day or as part of a short ankle circuit two or three times a week. It costs almost nothing in recovery, so frequency is free. Pair it with calf raises rather than replacing them — the two work opposite directions at the ankle and both matter if you run, hike or play a stop-start sport.
No kit, too hard, or too easy — here's where to go instead.
It addresses one plausible cause, which is a tibialis anterior that cannot absorb the eccentric load of your forefoot hitting the ground. It will not fix shin pain that is already flared up — reduce running volume first, then build the muscle. Persistent, localised bone pain needs a doctor, not a gym exercise, because stress fractures present the same way.
Only for balance and a fixed path. You can do the same movement standing on a step holding a rail, or seated with a band around your forefoot, and get nearly identical loading. If your gym's Smith machine is busy, do not wait for it.
The platform. Standing on flat floor, your toes come up to roughly the level of your heels and that is the end of the range. Standing with your heels on a block, your forefeet start below your heels and travel further, which loads the muscle through a longer range and in a lengthened position.
A little, and it is one of the few ways to change the front of the lower leg at all. The tibialis anterior is small so the visual change is modest — expect a more defined ridge alongside the shin bone rather than obvious mass.
