The bar hangs from chains or straps at stomach height and you stand up into it from a near-parallel torso position. Like the pin version it removes the eccentric, but the suspension means the bar can swing, so you also have to stop the load oscillating — an honesty test no fixed rack can give you.
Set up first, then execute. Every cue below is something you can check on your next set.
Breathing & tempo — Inhale and brace with the bar still resting on the chains, hold through the drive to lockout, exhale standing, then lower and take a fresh breath. Fast off the bottom, controlled back down.
Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
Load like the pin version: start around 20-25% of your best squat and stay there until the bar leaves the chains with no swing and no change in torso angle. Add 2.5-5 kg a week while reps stay at 3-5. Steadiness is the marker to watch — a bar that oscillates on the way up means the weight is ahead of your ability to drive it evenly.
The errors that show up most often, and the cue that fixes each one.
Level the bar with a tape measure or by counting links before loading it. A tilted bar under a long lever puts an asymmetric torque through your spine on every rep.
Let it hang dead still, take a fresh breath, re-brace and then pull the slack out. A swinging start means the load arrives off-centre and your erectors take the difference.
Raise the chains until your starting torso angle is near parallel and you can hold a flat back there against the empty bar. Deeper is not more productive if your spine rounds to reach it.
Keep it at 3-5 reps at a weight you can start decisively. If a rep does not leave the chains in the first second, stand out of it and strip weight rather than fighting from a fixed hip angle.
Hanging the bar from chains does two things a pin rack cannot. It gives a silent, forgiving start position with no steel to bang the knurling into, and it lets the bar move. Any sideways lean, any uneven push, and the bar swings across your back and you feel it immediately. Fixed pins hide those asymmetries; chains report them.
Everything else about the movement is the dead-stop good morning: you start from a near-horizontal torso with no stretch reflex, and you drive the hips through to standing. Force has to be produced from a cold, fully flexed hip, which is exactly the position where a heavy squat or a stalling deadlift gets lost.
Once a week as a squat or deadlift accessory, 4-5 sets of 3-5 with a full reset between reps. Pick it over the pin version when you have straps or chains available and want the extra stability demand; pick pins when you want the cleanest possible strength measurement. Do not run both in the same week.
No kit, too hard, or too easy — here's where to go instead.
Anything that holds the bar level and is rated for the load: heavy-duty suspension straps, spud straps, or a matched pair of loops over the rack's top crossmember. Both sides must be the same length and both anchor points must be rated — an uneven hang loads one side of your back harder on every rep. If you can only improvise one side properly, do not improvise at all; run the pin version, which costs you nothing but the stability demand.
Long enough that the bar hangs at roughly stomach height, putting your torso near parallel when you duck under it. Set it with an empty bar, check both sides are equal, and record the link count so your next session starts from the same position.
It is manageable if you control it. Take the slack out before you drive, push evenly through both feet, and let the bar come to rest between reps. What you should never do is chase a swinging bar with your hips mid-rep — stand out of the rep and reset.
You get a different one. The standard version trains the full range including the eccentric, which is where most of the hamstring stimulus lives. This one trains concentric force production from a dead start at a near-horizontal torso. Use the standard version as your bread and butter and this as a targeted block when the bottom of your squat is the weak point.
