
A standing single-leg cable drill: an ankle cuff on a low pulley drags one leg out to the side, and you pull it back across the midline against the stack. It loads the adductor group directly through a long range, which almost nothing else in a normal leg session does.

Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
Start on the lightest two plates of the stack — most people can adduct far less than they assume, and a heavy stack will simply pull you off the standing foot. Progress when you can complete 15 controlled reps per leg with a level pelvis and no torso lean; add one plate rather than more reps.
The errors that show up most often, and the cue that fixes each one.
Halve the weight and set a 1-second squeeze at the midline with a 3-second return. If the plate slaps the stack on the way back, it is not under control.
Grip the upright and keep your shoulders stacked over the standing foot. Reduce the load until you can keep your ribcage vertical for every rep.
Point the toes straight ahead and imagine sweeping the inner ankle bone across the floor. The line of pull should stay purely side to side.
Train it for adductor strength and log it as such. Where you lose fat is decided by your overall energy balance, not by which muscle you contract.
The adductor magnus is one of the largest muscles in the lower body and a serious hip extensor, yet it only ever gets trained as a bystander in squats and lunges. A cable cuff on the ankle gives it a resistance line it actually opposes: the pulley pulls the leg away from the midline, and adduction is the only way back.
Groin strains happen at long muscle lengths, when the leg is out wide and being asked to brake. Because the cable holds tension at the far end of the range rather than at the top, this is one of the few gym movements that loads the adductors where they usually fail. Upstream databases file this under quadriceps; that is simply wrong, and you should feel it high on the inner thigh.
Accessory work at the end of a lower-body day, or on an upper-body day if your knees need a break from squatting. Two or three sets per leg, twice a week, is enough. It pairs badly with heavy squats immediately afterwards — tired adductors let the knees drift in.

No. You cannot choose where fat comes off, and no amount of adduction work will change the fat layer over the muscle beneath it. What it will do is make the adductors stronger and more tolerant of long-range loading, which matters for squat depth and for anyone who plays a sport with cutting and lateral steps.
For most purposes, yes. The seated machine trains adduction with the hip flexed and your torso supported; the cable version trains it standing, on one leg, with the pelvis having to stay level. That is closer to how the adductors work when you push off sideways. The seated machine wins only when you want more absolute load.
If you squat wide and deep, your adductors get a decent share of the work. Add this when you have a specific reason: a previous groin strain, knees that cave under load, or a sport with repeated lateral pushes. As general leg development it is a low priority next to squatting.
Because the exercise database it came from mislabels this one, and also uses the word abduct where it means adduct. Pulling the leg toward and across the midline is adduction, and the muscles doing it are the adductor longus, brevis, magnus, gracilis and pectineus. If you feel this in the front of your thigh, your foot has rotated out.
