
A seated machine that curls your torso and knees toward each other against a selectorised stack. Its one real advantage over floor crunches is the weight pin: abs respond to progressive load like any other muscle, and this is the easiest place in the gym to add 5 kg to them.
Set up first, then execute. Every cue below is something you can check on your next set.
Breathing & tempo — Exhale forcefully as you crunch and squeeze the last of the air out at the bottom; inhale on the way back. One second down, one-second squeeze, two to three seconds back.
Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
Start with two or three plates — often 10-15 kg — and find the weight that makes rep 15 genuinely hard while your spine still flexes fully. Add one plate once you hit the top of your rep range on every set for two sessions running. If adding weight shortens your range, you have gone past what the movement is for; go back down.
The errors that show up most often, and the cue that fixes each one.
Rest the backs of your arms on the pads and hold the handles with an open, loose grip. If the weight stops moving when your arms go slack, that is the honest load — use it.
Lower the seat until the machine's pivot lines up with your navel, then cue your bottom ribs to travel toward your hips. The spine has to flex; a straight-backed rep is a hip flexor exercise.
Cut the weight in half and go until your abs are fully shortened at the bottom and fully lengthened at the top. Full range at 20 kg beats a quarter rep at 60 kg.
Set a weight that fails you at 12-15 reps and add load when you clear the top of that range twice. Abs adapt to progressive tension, not to endurance sets.
Stop the return a couple of centimetres before the plates touch and reverse. Continuous tension is most of the value of a machine over the floor.
The rectus abdominis shortens the distance between your ribs and your pelvis. That is the whole job. This machine drives both ends toward each other at once — upper torso down, knees up — which is more spinal flexion under load than a bodyweight crunch can produce, and it does it against a stack you can count.
The reason to use a machine rather than the floor is honest progression. Most people do sets of 30 crunches for years and wonder why nothing changes. Working at 10-15 reps with a load you can log, and adding a plate when that gets easy, is how the abs actually grow. What it will not do is reveal them; visible abs are a body-fat outcome and no amount of stack weight changes that.
At the end of a session, two or three times a week, 3-4 sets. Do not put it before squats or deadlifts — a pre-fatigued trunk is a worse brace under a heavy bar. Pair it with something anti-extension like a rollout or a plank so you train the abs to resist movement as well as create it.
No kit, too hard, or too easy — here's where to go instead.
It will build the muscle. Whether you can see it is decided by body fat, and no ab exercise burns fat off the area it trains — spot reduction is not a thing. Train the abs like any other muscle and handle visibility through diet and total training volume.
For growth, yes, because you can load it and log it. For carryover to bracing under a heavy bar, no — that is what rollouts, planks and heavy carries do. Most people should run one of each rather than choose.
You are pulling with your arms and craning your neck to move the stack. Drop the weight substantially, let your arms rest passively on the pads, keep your chin neutral, and start the movement by pulling your ribs down. If the weight will not move that way, it is too heavy.
Two or three sessions a week, 3-4 sets each, at the end of the workout. Abs recover quickly but they are not exempt from needing rest, and daily high-rep ab work is mostly wasted time that adds nothing over a properly loaded twice-weekly dose.
