Chains hang from the bar sleeves and pile onto the floor as you lower, so the bar gets lighter at the chest and heavier toward lockout. It is accommodating resistance for lifters whose bench dies in the top third, and it is useless to anyone who has not first learned to press a straight bar off a pause.

Breathing & tempo — One held breath per rep, released at lockout. Controlled two-second descent, brief settle on the chest, then press as fast as the load allows.
Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
Start with a single 10 kg chain per side and 50% of your paused bench on the bar. That is enough to feel the curve change. Judge it by bar speed: if the last rep of a triple moves noticeably slower than the first, the straight weight is too high, not the chain. Add chain weight before you add bar weight.

Adjust the leader chain until roughly half the links deload at the bottom. Chains should modify the curve, not replace the bottom half of the lift with an empty bar.
Settle the bar at the top before the first rep and pause fractionally on the chest each rep. If the swing persists, shorten the hang so the chains sit closer to the sleeve.
Keep chain work to 50-60% straight bar weight plus chain on speed days, and stop the set the moment bar speed drops. The point is acceleration, not a grinder.
If you fail off the chest, chains are the wrong tool — press paused with straight weight and add wide-grip volume. Reserve chains for a lockout that stalls.
A straight-bar bench is hardest a few centimetres off the chest and easiest at lockout, so the weight you can handle is capped by your worst position. Chains invert that curve: with links stacking on the floor at the bottom, you might hold 60 kg of chain weight at lockout and only 15 kg at the chest. The load now matches your strength curve rather than fighting it.
The second effect is what most lifters actually feel. Because the bar gets lighter as it descends, you have to keep pulling it down and drive it back with real intent or the chain deload turns into a slow, sloppy rep. Chains punish anyone who presses tentatively, and they train the aggressive reversal a paused competition bench demands.
As the main press on a dynamic-effort or speed day, or as the top-set variation for a lifter whose bench stalls in the last third of the lockout. Run it for a 3-4 week block, then swap back to straight weight. It is not a beginner's tool: you need a repeatable bar path before adding a load that swings.
No kit, too hard, or too easy — here's where to go instead.
Roughly 10-20% of your bench max in total chain weight at full lockout, split evenly across the sleeves. A 100 kg bencher does fine with one 10 kg chain per side. Set the leader so about half the links are on the floor at the chest and all of them are airborne at lockout.
Chains deload smoothly and never pull you down faster than gravity, which makes them the safer choice for the descent. Bands add far more tension at the top and force an aggressive eccentric — better for overload, harder on the shoulders. If you only get one, chains are the more forgiving tool.
No. Nearly all of the benefit comes from pressing with intent, which you can train with straight weight at 50-60% on a speed day. Chains are a refinement for a lifter who already has a stable technique and a specific lockout weakness, not a requirement.
You can, but the number is not comparable to anything. A chain single tells you about your lockout, not your bench. Test with straight weight and a competition pause, and keep chains in the accessory or speed slot.
