A one-arm floor press with a twist: the leg on the pressing side crosses over the midline, rolling that shoulder further back and restoring range the floor normally removes. The kettlebell hangs behind the wrist, so the forearm fights to keep the bell from tipping the whole way.

Breathing & tempo — Inhale as the elbow lowers, hold the brace through the pause on the floor, exhale as you press across. Three seconds down, one second on the floor, one second up.
Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
Start with a 12 kg bell if you press regularly, 8 kg if you are new to kettlebells — the offset load makes it feel heavier than the same weight in a dumbbell. A good working weight lets you pause on the floor for a full second without your free shoulder lifting. Jump to the next bell size only once both sides hit the top of the rep range with no rotation, and set that jump by the weaker arm.
The errors that show up most often, and the cue that fixes each one.
Grip the handle deep in the palm with the wrist dead straight and the bell resting on the forearm. If the wrist bends back under load, drop to a lighter bell until the forearm can hold the stack.
Drive the opposite heel into the floor and keep both shoulder blades pinned. Treat any rotation as a signal to end the set, not as an acceptable way to finish the rep.
Aim the bell across toward the opposite collarbone as you press and finish over the centre of your chest. The adduction is the whole point of the arm path here.
Keep the ribs down and the lumbar spine near the ground. The range should come from the crossed leg rotating the pelvis, not from your spine bending backwards.
A standard floor press stops when your triceps hit the ground, which caps the shoulder well short of a bench's range. Crossing the pressing-side leg over your body rotates the pelvis and lets that shoulder blade sink further into the floor, so the elbow travels behind the torso and the chest gets loaded in a stretch — while the floor still limits how far it can go and catches you if you fail.
Pressing one arm means the other half of your torso has to stop you rotating. The kettlebell's offset mass makes that harder still: the bell sits behind the wrist rather than over it, so the load constantly tries to pull the arm back and the hand open. You get chest and triceps work, a hard anti-rotation demand through the obliques, and grip and forearm work you did not ask for.
Second or third movement on a push day, or as the main press when you have a kettlebell and no bench. Three sets of 6-10 per side, alternating without rest between arms. It is also a sensible bridge back to pressing after a shoulder problem, because the floor sets a hard depth limit for you.
No kit, too hard, or too easy — here's where to go instead.
Finish one side, then the other. Alternating rep by rep means unloading and reloading the bell every rep, and the setup — crossing the leg, packing the shoulder — is half the work. Do all reps on the right, take about 30 seconds to switch the leg cross and re-stack the wrist, then do the left. Always run the same number of reps on both sides, set by the weaker arm, or the anti-rotation demand is the only thing you end up training unevenly.
Yes, for two reasons. The floor caps the depth, which is useful when your shoulders are irritated, and the dead-stop pause removes the stretch reflex so the press starts from nothing. It also needs no spotter — a failed rep just lands on your chest. It is not a replacement for benching; it is a different flavour of it.
The bell hangs behind your wrist instead of sitting over it, so the load constantly tries to rotate the forearm back. That adds real grip, wrist and forearm work, and it teaches you to keep a stacked wrist under load. If you only want chest, a dumbbell is simpler; if you want the whole arm involved, use the bell.
Expect around 40-45% of what you press with both arms combined, and often less at first. The shortfall is anti-rotation, not chest strength — the limiting factor is usually your trunk keeping the free shoulder pinned to the floor. That gap narrows quickly with a few weeks of practice.
