Two dumbbells pressed from the sides of your chest with the palms turned forward. Each arm balances its own weight, so the sticking point is stabilisation rather than raw force, and the dumbbells can travel below the line a barbell would stop at.
Set up first, then execute. Every cue below is something you can check on your next set.
Breathing & tempo — Inhale as the bells come down, hold the brace at the bottom, exhale hard as you press through the sticking point. Three seconds down, no bounce, about one second up.
Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
Start with 10-12 kg per hand if you have pressed before, 6-8 kg if you have not, and prove the path before adding load. Pressing your bodyweight split across two bells for 5 reps is a solid intermediate marker. Move up a dumbbell size only when the top set is clean and the bells stop wobbling at the bottom — usually a 2-4 kg jump per hand, which is a bigger step than it sounds.
The errors that show up most often, and the cue that fixes each one.
Rest each bell on the corresponding thigh, then kick knee and bell up together as you lie back. It costs nothing and keeps your shoulder out of a loaded external-rotation grind before the set starts.
Cue the elbows to a 45-degree angle and keep the forearms vertical at the bottom of every rep. If they still flare, drop 4 kg per hand and rebuild the path.
Stop with a fist's width between the bells and hold a hard chest contraction for a beat. The clang wastes force and shifts load to the triceps lockout.
Leave one rep in reserve when pressing alone, and practise the sit-up exit: knees up, bells to chest, roll forward. Never dump heavy dumbbells backwards over your shoulders.
A barbell locks your hands into one path and stops on your ribcage. Dumbbells do neither. Your hands can descend past chest level and can travel toward each other at the top, so the chest works through a longer range and finishes closer to full shortening. That extra range at the bottom is where most of the size advantage over a barbell comes from.
The cost is control. Two independent weights means each shoulder stabilises alone, and any strength difference between sides shows up immediately instead of being hidden by the strong arm. Expect your total dumbbell load to sit somewhere near 80% of your barbell bench, and expect that number to be governed by the wobble, not the chest.
Lead a push day with these, or run them after a barbell press as the second movement in the 8-12 range. Two chest sessions a week is enough for most people. Pair them with a horizontal row on the same day so the shoulder does not spend the whole week being pushed forward.

As a rough guide, the two dumbbells together come to about 75-85% of your barbell bench for the same reps. So a 100 kg bench often means a pair of 40 kg bells. The gap is stabilisation, not chest strength, and it narrows as you practise the lift.
A small arch, yes — the natural curve you get when you pin your shoulder blades down and back into the bench. That position is what keeps the shoulder packed, and losing it is how the front of the shoulder ends up carrying the press. What you do not need is a competition powerlifting arch: that exists to shorten the bar path under a maximal barbell, and with dumbbells you have no bar path to shorten. Keep your ribs from flaring and both feet flat on the floor.
Barbell if you want a measurable, heavily loadable press. Dumbbells if you want range of motion, even strength between sides, and a lift you can take near failure alone. Most people are best served by running one as the main lift and the other as the accessory, and swapping which is which every couple of months.
Set every rep count by the weaker arm — press both, but stop the set when the weak side is done. Do not add extra sets for the weak arm with heavier weight; that widens the gap in technique quality. A few months of matched reps usually closes it.
