
Sit with one leg extended, loop a belt or band around the forefoot, and pull the inside edge of the foot toward you so the sole turns inward. That inversion is what lengthens peroneus longus and brevis on the outside of the lower leg — a direction almost no other stretch takes the ankle.
Set up first, then execute. Every cue below is something you can check on your next set.
Breathing & tempo — Slow, unhurried breathing with the hold. Ease a few degrees further into the inversion on each exhale and hold still on the inhale; never pull harder while breathing in.
Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
No weight. The belt supplies the force and your arms dose it — pull to firm tension, never to pain. Two or three holds of 15-20 seconds per side, four to six times a week if this is a problem area. Progress by adding a little more ankle plantarflexion to the position rather than by pulling harder.
The errors that show up most often, and the cue that fixes each one.
Keep the kneecap pointing straight at the ceiling for the whole hold. If it drifts outward you have moved the hip and the peroneals never felt anything.
Slide the strap back to the widest part of the foot. Pulling on the toes bends them backwards and puts the tension into the plantar fascia instead of the outer shin.
Pull to the first firm resistance and hold it steady. On a healing lateral sprain, inversion is the direction the ligaments were injured in — go to comfortable tension only and never near the end range.
Follow it with single-leg balance work — 30 seconds per leg, eyes closed once it is easy. Restoring proprioception is what lowers reinjury rate; the stretch just makes the position available.
Every common ankle stretch pulls the foot upward. The peroneals do not resist that; they resist inversion, the foot rolling inward. So the only way to reach them is to actively turn the sole toward the midline, which needs a belt because you cannot generate that pull with your own foot muscles while relaxing them.
This matters most after a lateral ankle sprain, where the peroneals spend weeks working overtime as guards, and in anyone who runs on cambered roads or trains in hard-soled shoes. Be clear on what the stretch buys you though: a bit more accessible inversion range for a few minutes to an hour, and no protection against rolling the ankle again. Balance work does that.
End of a session or on a rest day, in the same block as your calf stretches. Two or three holds of 15-20 seconds per side. If you are rehabbing a sprained ankle, roll the peroneals first, stretch second, then do your balance work while the range is open — the last part is the part that actually reduces reinjury.
No kit, too hard, or too easy — here's where to go instead.
Only if you can reach the foot with a straight knee and a flat back, which most people cannot. If you can, hook your fingers over the inside edge of the forefoot and pull it toward your opposite hip. If reaching means rounding your spine, use a towel — the position of the foot is what matters, and rounding to reach it changes nothing about the ankle.
They are mirror images. This one inverts the foot, turning the sole inward, and stretches the peroneals on the outside of the leg. The posterior tibialis stretch everts the foot, turning the sole outward, and stretches the deep muscle on the inside. Different directions, different muscles, and being sloppy about which way you pull means you stretched the wrong one.
No. Range is not the limiting factor in ankle sprains — reaction speed and balance are. Single-leg stands progressing to unstable surfaces reduce recurrence in the research; stretching on its own does not. Do the stretch if the outer leg feels tight, but do the balance work because it is the part that works.
