A 60 kg lifter who totals 400 kg and a 120 kg lifter who totals 700 kg have both done something impressive, and nothing about the raw numbers tells you which is more impressive. A relative-strength coefficient settles it: divide the total by how much a lifter of that bodyweight would be expected to lift, and you get one number that compares everybody.
DOTS is that number. Tim Konertz published it in 2019 as a rebuild of the ageing Wilks coefficient, fitted to modern competition data. It takes only your sex, your bodyweight and your total, and it needs nothing else — no weight class, no federation, no equipment category.
These bands are a rough guide, not an official classification — neither Konertz nor any federation publishes one. They are calibrated against the spread of DOTS scores you actually see in raw competition.
The bands are identical for men and women. Normalising sex away is precisely what the separate male and female coefficients are for, and it is why a meet can give out a single overall Best Lifter award.
Wilks (Robert Wilks, 1994) was the sport's standard for two decades. As the pool of competition data grew, its treatment of the very lightest and very heaviest lifters drew steady criticism, and most federations have now moved on. Wilks2 is his own 2020 refit; it is normalised to 600 rather than 500, so it reads roughly 20% higher and its numbers are not interchangeable with the original's.
DOTS is the answer most non-IPF federations landed on. The USPA settles Best Lifter placings by DOTS, and USA Powerlifting has used it for Open Best Lifter since 2022.
IPF GL points are the International Powerlifting Federation's own formula, official since 2020. They use a different shape entirely — an exponential rather than a polynomial — and are scaled so that 100 points is the standard of an average elite lifter at your bodyweight. DOTS divides your total by a quartic polynomial in your bodyweight, with one set of coefficients for men and another for women:
DOTS = total × 500 / (a·bw⁴ + b·bw³ + c·bw² + d·bw + e)
Bodyweight and total are both in kilograms — pounds are converted first, never approximated. The fit only holds between about 40 and 210 kg for men; beyond that the polynomial turns over and the score would start rising with bodyweight, which is nonsense. We clamp to the edge and say so.
A DOTS score is only ever a snapshot of one day. Its whole point is to trend: as your total climbs and your bodyweight settles, the number tells you whether you are actually getting stronger or just getting bigger.
