
A machine calf raise done with the knees bent to roughly 90 degrees and a pad across the lower thighs. Bending the knee slackens the gastrocnemius, which hands the work to the soleus underneath it — the deep, endurance-dominant calf muscle that standing raises largely skip.

Breathing & tempo — Inhale as the heels drop, exhale as you drive up. Two seconds down, two-second pause in the stretch, one second up, one-second squeeze at the top.
Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
Start with roughly a quarter of your bodyweight on the stack and expect the number to look small next to a standing raise — the soleus works alone here. Good looks like 20 controlled reps with a two-second pause in the stretch. Add a plate only once you hit the top of your rep range with that pause intact on every rep.

Cut the load by half and take each rep from a full two-second stretch to a locked-out squeeze. Range beats plates on this machine every time.
Use 15-25 reps with a slow eccentric. The soleus is slow-twitch dominant and responds to time under tension, not to maximal load.
Slide the pad back to the lower third of the thigh. If the machine's adjustment cannot get it there, fold a towel over the pad and sit further forward.
Pause two full seconds at the bottom with the muscle still tensed. The stretch reflex will do the work for you otherwise, and the soleus never contracts.
The calf is two muscles with different anatomy. The gastrocnemius crosses the knee as well as the ankle, so bending the knee to 90 degrees shortens it and takes it largely out of play. The soleus does not cross the knee, so it keeps working regardless of knee angle. That is the whole reason this machine exists, and it is why standing raises alone leave part of your lower leg undertrained.
The soleus is dominated by slow-twitch fibre and is built for sustained low-level force — it is what holds you upright all day. Training it with the 6-rep sets you would use on a squat is a waste of the machine. It responds to time under tension: sets of 15-25 with a real pause in the stretch, taken close to failure.
At the end of a lower-body session, or slotted between sets of something unrelated like rows. Two or three sessions a week, paired with a standing raise on separate days so you cover both muscles. If your calves look developed from the front but flat around the ankle and lower shin, this is the movement you have been missing.
No kit, too hard, or too easy — here's where to go instead.
Both, on different days. Standing raises train the gastrocnemius with the knee straight; seated raises train the soleus with the knee bent. They are different muscles and one does not substitute for the other. If you only have time for one, pick standing for visible calf size and seated if your lower calf and ankle look underdeveloped.
Because you have removed the gastrocnemius, the larger and stronger of the two muscles, by bending the knee. Whatever weight you can handle here is coming from the soleus alone. Comparing the two numbers tells you nothing useful.
Yes. Sit on a bench with the balls of your feet on a block and rest a barbell across your lower thighs with a pad or folded towel under it. It works, but the ceiling is low: the bar rolls, and what you can balance on your thighs is usually well under half what the machine's stack gives you. A single heavy dumbbell held on one knee, one leg at a time, is more practical and gets you closer to failure.
As high as your ankle will extend, then hold for a second. Most people stop an inch short and never feel the contraction. If the stack is so heavy that your ankles cannot fully extend, the weight is wrong regardless of how many reps you complete.
