
A seated curl with the upper arms fixed on a pad and the handles driven by a cam. It strips every stabilising demand out of the movement, which makes it the safest way to curl to genuine failure and to run drop sets without your technique collapsing into a hip swing.
Set up first, then execute. Every cue below is something you can check on your next set.
Breathing & tempo — Exhale on the way up, inhale on the way down. One to two seconds up, a one-second hold at the top, three seconds down. The slow lowering is most of what you are paying for on a machine.
Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
Start at a quarter of the stack and adjust after the first set: the right weight is one where the last two reps are slow but you never lean back. Because there is nothing to stabilise, you can train this to failure safely. Add a plate when 15 reps with a one-second top hold stop being hard, or add a drop instead of a plate.
The errors that show up most often, and the cue that fixes each one.
Raise the seat until your armpits sit on the top of the pad with the shoulders down. If the machine will not go high enough for you, use a cable preacher curl instead — a shrugged setup hands the movement to your traps.
Stop the lowering a couple of centimetres before the plates touch. Resting the load at the bottom halves the time under tension in a set that has no other demands on you.
Press your chest into the pad and keep it there for the whole set. The rep where you have to lean is the rep you should have stopped on.
Do your free-weight curling first and finish here. The fixed path removes the stabilising work that carries over to everything else you lift, so it belongs at the end of a session rather than instead of one.
Everything that makes a free-weight curl a whole-body skill — holding the elbows still, resisting the lean, controlling the bar path — is handled for you by the frame. What is left is elbow flexion against resistance. That narrowness is a drawback on most exercises and an advantage on the last set of an arm day.
The cam also flattens the loading curve. A dumbbell is easy at the bottom and top and hardest at 90 degrees; a well-built curl machine keeps meaningful tension across most of the range. How well any given machine does this varies enormously between manufacturers, so judge the one in front of you by where the set actually gets hard.
Last biceps movement of a session, 10-15 reps, taken to within a rep or two of failure. It is the ideal home for drop sets: with nothing to stabilise you can strip the pin and keep going without form deciding when the set ends. Two or three sets after your free-weight curling is enough.
No kit, too hard, or too easy — here's where to go instead.
For biceps size, close enough that it is not worth arguing about — the muscle responds to tension and reps, not to which frame holds the weight. For everything else the barbell wins: wrist and grip strength, elbow stability, and the ability to hold a load still. Treat the machine as a supplement, not a replacement.
Almost always a seat set too low, so the edge of the pad presses into your triceps instead of the flat of it supporting them. Raise the seat until your upper arms lie along the pad. If the pad is genuinely too short for your arm length, a preacher bench with a dumbbell fits better.
On most curl machines, yes, and it is worth doing if one arm is visibly behind. Set the weight to what the weaker arm can handle, work that side first, and match its rep count with the stronger arm rather than pushing the stronger one further ahead.
Often, yes — but for the grip, not the frame. Most elbow pain on a barbell curl comes from a fixed supinated grip forcing the forearm into rotation it does not have; a machine with rotating or angled handles removes that. If your machine has a fixed straight bar, it will not help. Try an EZ bar or hammer curls first and see whether the grip angle was the whole problem before you write off free weights.
