
A crunch performed lying back over a stability ball, with the lower back draped across the curve so the torso starts below horizontal. That extra 20-30 degrees of extension at the bottom is the point: the abs are loaded at a longer length than the floor allows, and the ball adds a balance demand the floor never provides.

Breathing & tempo — Exhale through the curl and finish the breath at the top of the squeeze — a full exhale pulls the ribs down and adds to the contraction. Inhale as you extend back over the ball. Two seconds up, one second hold, three seconds down.
Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
Bodyweight until you can complete 20 controlled reps through a full range. Then hold a 5 kg plate flat against your chest and drop back to 12 reps; add 2.5 kg at a time. Moving the plate from chest to arms-extended-overhead is a further step up without any extra weight, because it lengthens the lever.
The errors that show up most often, and the cue that fixes each one.
Roll further down the ball until your shoulders sit lower than your hips at the bottom. If you are level at the start, you have thrown away the only advantage the ball gives you.
Squeeze your glutes to hold the hips level and press your feet into the floor. If the ball still travels, move your feet wider and slow the tempo down.
Cross your arms over your chest for every set until the neck stops fatiguing. When you want more load, hold a plate on your chest rather than moving your hands back.
Stop when the shoulder blades clear the ball. Past that point the hip flexors take over and your abs get a rest at the top of every rep.
Inflate it firm enough that it barely deforms under your back. A soft ball flattens out and gives you the same range as the floor.
A floor crunch starts with the spine already flat, so the abs work through maybe 30 degrees before the rep is over. Draping over the ball lets your torso drop below level first, roughly doubling the working range. Training a muscle at long lengths under tension is one of the more reliable ways to grow it.
The instability is a smaller factor than people claim, but it is not nothing — the ball punishes any side-to-side wobble, so your obliques work to keep you tracking straight. What it will not do is burn meaningfully more calories or replace loaded trunk work; it is a better crunch, not a different category of exercise.

The argument against crunches comes from research on repeated heavy flexion under compression, which is a fair warning against doing hundreds of loaded sit-ups and a poor reason to avoid flexion altogether. Your spine is built to bend. Do moderate sets of controlled reps and keep total volume sane. If you already have a diagnosed disc problem, skip loaded flexion and train the abs with dead bugs and carries instead.
Widen your feet, squeeze your glutes to keep the hips level, and slow the eccentric down. Most wobble is momentum, not instability. Bracing a foot against a wall works while you learn, but wean off it — the balance demand is part of the exercise.
They build the muscle; they do not reveal it. Visibility is a body-fat question, and no amount of crunching changes fat distribution. Train the abs as you would any muscle — progressive load, controlled range — and let diet handle the rest.
