An old-time lift where a kettlebell never actually gets pressed: you hold it locked overhead and bend your body away underneath it until your free hand touches the floor, then stand back up. It is the heaviest single-arm overhead lift most people will ever do, and it is an obliques and thoracic-rotation skill long before it is a shoulder exercise.
Set up first, then execute. Every cue below is something you can check on your next set.
Breathing & tempo — Take a breath and brace at the top, breathe shallowly through the descent while keeping the trunk tight, and exhale as you stand. Descend over three to four seconds; there is no fast version of this lift.
Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
Start with a 12-16 kg bell if you are a man, 8-12 kg if you are a woman, and only after you can hold a kettlebell windmill in the bottom position for 10 seconds. The marker of readiness for more is a paused bottom position where the loaded arm is still vertical and you can breathe. Add the next bell size, not reps — this is a low-rep skill lift.
The errors that show up most often, and the cue that fixes each one.
Lock the elbow before the descent starts and do not let it bend at all. Rehearse the pattern with no weight, tracking a point on the ceiling with your fist so you feel the torso doing the travelling.
Keep your eyes locked on it from clean to rack. Vision drives the shoulder position here; the moment you look at the floor, the arm drifts and the bell moves out of the line you can support.
Turn the free shoulder towards the floor as you descend so it becomes a rotation as well as a side-bend. Practise unloaded until the chest visibly opens towards the bell side.
Use a bell you can bent press for five clean singles per side with a pause at the bottom. Add the next bell size only when all five look identical on film.
The arm barely moves. What happens is that your torso side-bends and rotates away from a fixed overhead point, so the bell descends relative to your body while staying in the same place in the room. That makes the shoulder's job isometric, and it is why lifters through history bent-pressed loads far above their strict press.
The working muscles are the ones stopping you folding: the obliques and quadratus lumborum on the loaded side, the lats keeping the shoulder packed, and the hip on the bell side taking your weight as you shift into it. The overhead arm is a strut. If your shoulder is what fails, you have loaded a skill you have not built.
Early in a session while you are fresh and your attention is intact, one or two days a week, 3-5 singles or doubles per side. Never programme it for reps to fatigue with a heavy bell — a bent press that goes wrong ends with a kettlebell falling on your head from full extension.
No kit, too hard, or too easy — here's where to go instead.
Neither label fits well, but the trunk is doing more than the shoulder. The overhead arm holds an isometric position while the obliques, quadratus lumborum and lats control a loaded side-bend and rotation. If you want shoulder hypertrophy, press. If you want a trunk that resists lateral collapse under an overhead load, bent press.
The windmill keeps the legs straighter and is a mobility-biased pattern; the bent press lets the loaded-side knee and hip bend so you can get much further under a much heavier bell. Learn the windmill first — it is the same movement with the load and the risk turned down.
Because the bell hardly moves. You lower your body around a fixed weight instead of raising the weight, so the limiting factor is how far you can bend and how well your shoulder holds a locked position, not how strong your deltoid is. Records of well over 100 kg exist for exactly that reason.
No. Every rep is a heavy load balanced over your head while your spine is bent and rotated, and the failure mode is the bell landing on you. Keep it to singles, doubles and triples with full attention and full rest, and use something you can safely fail at for conditioning.
