Breathing & tempo — Inhale as your heels drop, exhale as you drive up. Three seconds down, a two-second pause in the stretch, one second up, one-second squeeze at the top.
Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
Start at around half your bodyweight on the stack and expect to progress fast — this is the strongest position you can put a calf in. Bodyweight on the stack for 15 full-range reps with a two-second stretch pause is a solid working standard. Move the pin only when every rep of the set still reaches full ankle extension.
The errors that show up most often, and the cue that fixes each one.
Halve the weight and take every rep from a full below-the-block stretch to full ankle extension. Count the reps you complete with that range, not the plates you selected.
Rest your fingers on the handles for position and nothing else — let go for one rep mid-set and nothing should change. If your arms are working, the pin is two or three plates too deep.
Set a slight bend before the first rep and treat the knee as welded. Watch yourself in the mirror from the side; the knee angle should never change.
Train them three times a week with 3-4 hard sets each session. Calves recover within a day or two and need frequency far more than they need a heroic single session.
The calf grows from the stretched end of the range, and this machine is built to deliver it. The block puts your forefeet several centimetres above the floor so your heels can drop well below them, and the shoulder pads take the load through your skeleton on a fixed vertical path. Nothing is limited by grip, balance or how a bar sits on your spine.
The knee stays straight, which means the gastrocnemius — the visible two-headed muscle that gives the calf its shape — is doing the work. The soleus underneath it barely participates at this knee angle. That is not a flaw, it is the division of labour: this machine covers half the lower leg, and a seated raise covers the other half.
End of a lower-body session, two or three times a week. Calves recover fast and tolerate frequency better than almost any other muscle, so three short sessions beat one long one. Alternate it across the week with a seated raise so both calf muscles get trained, and do not put it before squats — fatigued calves make the bottom of a squat unstable.
No kit, too hard, or too easy — here's where to go instead.
Anywhere from 8 to 30 works, as long as the set is genuinely close to failure and every rep is full range. The old claim that calves need only very high reps because they are 'used to walking' does not hold up — they respond to load and proximity to failure like any other muscle. Vary the range across the week rather than picking one number.
Slightly. Toes in biases the lateral head, toes out the medial head, but the effect is small and the range you lose fidgeting with foot angle costs you more than the emphasis gains. Point straight ahead, get the full stretch, and add variety through seated raises instead.
After. Fatigued calves make the bottom of a squat feel unstable, and your ankles contribute to keeping the bar over mid-foot. Calf raises take five minutes at the end of a session and cost you nothing there.
Yes. The Achilles is a very efficient spring, and without a pause it stores and returns most of the energy of the descent — the muscle contributes far less than you think. Two seconds at the bottom kills the rebound and forces the gastrocnemius to start the rep.
