
A skull crusher performed head-down on a decline bench with an EZ bar taken just inside shoulder width. The angle keeps load on the triceps at lockout instead of letting the bar stack over your elbows, and the bent bar spares the wrists that a straight bar tends to punish.
Set up first, then execute. Every cue below is something you can check on your next set.
Breathing & tempo — Inhale as the bar lowers over two to three seconds, exhale as you extend. Controlled on the way down is the whole exercise; there is nothing to gain from dropping fast.
Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
An EZ bar is 7-12 kg empty; start with the bar alone plus 2.5 kg a side and treat 30-35 kg total for 12 clean reps as a solid working level. Add 2.5 kg only when the upper arms stay fixed for every rep of every set. If your elbows complain, add reps rather than load, or move the work to a cable where the stretch position is less loaded.
The errors that show up most often, and the cue that fixes each one.
Keep the upper arms fixed at the same angle for every rep and let only the forearms move. If they creep, cut the weight by 20% and pause one second at the bottom of each rep to force the position.
Push the bar into the heel of your hand with knuckles up. If the wrists still fold on the angled grip, the load is too heavy for the leverage at your forehead.
Stop the bar just short of contact and reverse from a dead stop. Touching your skull with a loaded bar to find the bottom is not a range-of-motion cue, it is a miss waiting to happen.
Set the upper arms shoulder-width apart and keep them there. A narrower elbow position feels harder because the triceps are actually doing the work.
Two design choices make this different from the standard flat skull crusher. The decline tilts your torso so the upper arms never point straight at the ceiling, which means the triceps hold tension at the top rather than getting a free rest each rep. The EZ bar's angled grip rotates the hands towards neutral and takes the twist out of a pronated wrist held at the end of a long lever.
Lowering the bar to the forehead with the upper arms fixed puts the long head under stretch at the shoulder while the elbow flexes, which is the loaded-stretch position isolation work is for. That is also why it is the most elbow-sensitive triceps movement in a normal programme — the tension is highest exactly where the joint has least leverage.
After your pressing, 3-4 sets of 8-15, on a day when your elbows feel good. If you have already done dips or a close-grip press, keep it to two sets. Once or twice a week is enough triceps isolation for almost anyone who presses regularly.
No kit, too hard, or too easy — here's where to go instead.
To the forehead for this version. Lowering behind the head adds shoulder extension and more long-head stretch, but on a decline it drags the bar over your face on a longer, less controllable arc. If you want the behind-the-head range, do it on a flat bench where you can see and control the path.
Because there is no rest at the top. On a flat bench the bar sits directly over the elbow at lockout and tension drops to nearly nothing between reps; on a decline the arms stay angled so the triceps never unload. Expect to use 20-30% less weight for the same rep count.
It is the most elbow-demanding common triceps movement, but it is not inherently harmful. Problems come from heavy loads, fast eccentrics and elbows that drift. Keep the load moderate, the descent three seconds and the upper arms fixed, and most people tolerate it fine. If you already have elbow pain, use cable extensions until it settles.
Yes. Extensions load the long head in a stretched position but cannot approach the load a close-grip press or dip puts through the triceps at lockout. Run both: a heavy press for strength and size, this for the stretched-position work the press does not cover.
