Repeated jumps on and off a low box with no reset between them. Where a single jump measures how much force you can build from a standstill, the multiple response measures how little time you spend on the ground between efforts — the box is deliberately low so the rebound stays fast.
Set up first, then execute. Every cue below is something you can check on your next set.
Breathing & tempo — Do not try to breathe per rep. Take a full breath before the set, exhale in short sharp bursts through the contacts, and recover fully between sets. Every ground contact should be as brief as you can make it.
Where to start, and what to change when it stops being hard.
Bodyweight only, and never a weight vest here — extra load lengthens ground contact, which is exactly the quality you are trying to shorten. Start at a 30 cm box with 4 contacts. Progress by holding the same height and cutting the time your feet spend on the floor, then by adding a set. Raise the box by 10 cm only once every contact is silent and evenly timed.
The errors that show up most often, and the cue that fixes each one.
Drop the height by 15-20 cm. The measure of this drill is how fast you leave the ground, and a high box forces you to sink deep and lose the rebound.
Set the box low enough that you can come straight back down. If you need the reset to feel safe, you should be doing single-response front box jumps for now.
Cap the set at 4-6 contacts and take two full minutes between sets. Fatigued rebounds carry every bit of the landing impact and none of the reactive adaptation.
End the set on the first contact that sounds heavier than the one before it. Have someone listen or record it — noise is force you failed to redirect.
A single-response jump lets you gather: dip, settle, then launch. Chaining them removes that luxury. Each landing has to be turned straight back into a take-off, which trains the reactive side of the stretch-shortening cycle — tendon stiffness and the reflex response that make sprinting and cutting fast.
That is why the box height should drop when you switch from single to multiple. Ground contact time is the variable you are training; a tall box forces you to sink and grind, and the moment your feet stay down long enough to re-gather, you are back to doing separate jumps with extra landings bolted on.
Once you can do single box jumps quietly and are comfortable landing from a low drop, add these as the second plyometric of a session. 3-4 sets of 4-6 contacts, 2-3 minutes between sets, early in the day while you are fresh. Count contacts, not minutes — anything past roughly 40 quality contacts a week starts costing more in joint stress than it returns.

A set of ordinary box jumps has you step down and reset between reps, so each one starts from a standstill and trains force production from scratch. Here the landing feeds directly into the next take-off, so you are training how quickly you can reverse — a different quality, with shorter ground contacts and a lower box.
Step off if you are new to it; drop off once the landings are quiet. The reason the box stays low is precisely so that coming back down is survivable rep after rep. If you find yourself needing to jump down to reach the floor at speed, the box is too tall for this drill.
Around 30-40 total ground contacts a week across all your reactive work, split over one or two sessions, is plenty for most people who also lift. Contacts accumulate across drills, so count hurdle hops and skips towards the same budget rather than treating each drill separately.
Yes, before the squats — never after. Placed first they act as potentiation and cost you almost nothing on the bar. Placed at the end of a leg session you get slow, heavy contacts, which is the combination that produces sore knees and no adaptation.
